Birmingham Weekender
// Square Dance Coordinator

June – October 2017

Birmingham Weekender is the region’s biggest free arts festival, with Square Dance being one of the focal points of activity throughout the whole weekend of the festival in Victoria Square.

With a stage and wooden dance floor taking over the square alongside street food traders and bars, activity consisted of interactive dances classes from Bollywood to Appalachian Flatfoot, and performances spanning Chinese Lion Dance, Caribbean Carnival and a South Asian Medley there was something for everyone. Into the evenings saw live sets from Motown in Dub and Electric Swing Circus and DJ sets from Craig Charles and Don Letts.

My role was to oversee all aspects of artist production including accommodation, travel, scheduling and technical advancement, working alongside the wider Birmingham Weekender team and then  stage manage the event on the ground as well.

Birmingham’s largest arts festival, Birmingham Weekender features an awe-inspiring programme of free events from hundreds of world-class local and international artists and companies. We return from 27-29 September 2019 following the success of our 2017 edition! Expect an exciting programme packed with new commissions, world premieres, roaming and pop-up street theatre, participative events and workshops, and much more, across the city-centre and beyond. Birmingham Weekender is brought to the city by Culture Central, the cultural development agency for Birmingham.
